Welcome! New first-year students are beginning their studies at the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences

With the start of the 2026–27 winter semester, the "Friedrich List" Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences welcomes its new students.

For the approximately 250 first-semester studentsenrolled in two bachelor’s and five master’s programs, this marks the start of their studies in a field that could hardly be more relevant given the profound changes taking place in mobility and transportation.

“Mobility is changing, and we need people who understand this change and actively shape it,” emphasized Dean Prof. Dr.-Ing. Regine Gerike at the ceremonial welcome for first-semester students. In the coming years, students can expect not only in-depth knowledge but, above all, the opportunity to become the architects of future transportation systems themselves.

Shaping Transportation rather than just using it

Digitalization, new technologies, sustainability requirements, and changing mobility needs present a wide range of challenges for both academia and the professional world.

The seven degree programs offered by the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences provide the scientific foundations and tools needed to address these challenges. Students are encouraged to broaden their perspective — from simply using existing transportation systems to actively and responsibly shaping the mobility of the future.

The major challenges of mobility cannot be solved from a single perspective. Technical, economic, environmental, and social issues are intertwined. It is precisely at these intersections that interdisciplinary collaboration within the faculty comes into play.

For students, this means they can look beyond the boundaries of their own degree program, gain exposure to different disciplinary perspectives, and work together to develop solutions for the mobility of tomorrow.

To ensure this succeeds, the Teaching and Learning Agreement of the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences was once again signed by Professor Jörn Schönberger, Dean of Studies Transportation Economics, together with two representatives of the student body.

The agreement reaffirms the core values that guide teaching and research collaboration as well as guidelines on good scientific practice at our faculty.

International Master’s Program in “Mobility Systems” launches

Starting in the 2026–27 winter semester, the faculty is also placing greater emphasis on internationalization: For the first time, students will begin the new international master’s program “Mobility Systems.”

This English-language master’s program provides in-depth knowledge on the collection and analysis of data on mobility behavior. The modeling of road users’ mobility behavior and its impacts on society, the economy, and the environment are also integral parts of the program. In addition, methods of sustainable mobility planning are taught.

With the “Mobility Systems” degree program, the faculty is expanding its international academic offerings and thereby also promoting cross-border exchange in the spirit of a modern and future-oriented transportation science.

“Build your network!”

To kick off the program, the Dean therefore offered the new students some special advice: “Build your network!”

The first semester weeks organised by the Transport Students’ Council offer a great opportunity for this; they will continue to provide a wide range of information, social and networking events for first-year students until 1 November 2026.

After all, shaping mobility means bringing together different perspectives. And the program itself thrives on exchange and collaboration.

The Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences wishes all new students a successful start, many exciting encounters, and an inspiring time as students. Welcome, and we hope you enjoy studying transportation sciences!
