Initial Results from the Interreg Project “Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland National Park” and Invitation to a Public Workshop

The Interreg project “Transportation Services in the Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland National Park” has been underway since April 2024. On October 6, 2026, the project partners met in Děčín to present their initial findings. The project results are scheduled to be discussed at a public workshop on November 11.

In the Interreg project “Transport Services in the Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland National Parks,” the project partners — Czech Technical University in Prague (Děčín branch), Dresden University of Technology, the Bohemian Saxon Switzerland National Park Administration and the regional transport company Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge — are working together toward the goal of improving cross-border local transportation.

Following in-depth analyses of existing transportation services, visitor flows, and the state of automobile traffic, the first results were presented at an internal workshop of the project partners held at Děčín Castle.

The results of the analysis of the parking situation and the findings regarding “illegal” parking of passenger cars in the study area were presented. The results will be made available to the affected municipalities with the goal of improving signage.

Project manager Jiří Zeisek (Technical University of Prague) presented a model of a model parking lot developed based on his research into the condition of parking lots in the national park. Martin Jareš (Technical University of Dresden) reported on surveys of passenger numbers on the Elbe ferries. Based on this, detailed proposals for improving the frequency of service were developed.

In addition, numerous proposals for targeted improvements to public transportation services—such as route adjustments or improved service frequency—were developed based on scientific studies of specific aspects and field trips to the study area. The project managers will submit these proposals to the public transportation agencies.

Finally, the efforts of transit agencies on both sides of the border to exchange static data (e.g., schedules) and dynamic data (e.g., delays) even more comprehensively were described. Despite various obstacles, initial successes have been achieved in this area.

Invitation to a Public Workshop on November 11, 2026

The project partners cordially invite municipalities, interest groups, businesses, and residents of the study area, as well as anyone else interested, to attend the public workshop. It will take place on November 11, 2026, at Děčín Castle. There, the project results will be presented and discussed with the guests, and plans for their further practical implementation will be addressed.
